Why should a prisoner seek to have self-respect; what value does it serve to and/or for them?

The value of telling oneself the truth.

If a prisoner ever wants to get out of that prison, that prisoner has to tell him or herself the truth.

A prisoner that says to him or herself, "I'm not really in prison. I can go wherever I want to go in my own mind, whenever I get ready. The warden is the one who is really in prison because he has to watch me."

That is a prisoner who is never going to get out of that prison.

This may be the reason self-respect is the only respect. And may also be the reason Mr. Fuller defines respect as "refusing to lie to yourself and letting all other know you refuse to lie to yourself".

Because that is the only way you're ever gonna get it.
