Suggestion:
Always ask the person assigning you a task what are the conditions for satisfaction for the task.
Reason/Explanation:
In order to guarantee that you have completed the task successfully you must be able to "manage expectations". "Managing Expectations" is one of the buzz terms used that simply means to understand what it means to get things done. Understanding what it takes to get things done is essential to completing a task.
In understanding what it means to get things done you must understand what is being asked of you. Frequently what is being asked of you is not the best way to get things done. You'll want to do things in the best way. Asking the person assigning you a task what the conditions for satisfaction are will allow you to understand what they are asking you to do so that you can determine if it is the best way to complete the task.
The conditions for satisfaction are not only what to do but also how to do it. Once you understand what is being asked of you and you have determined the best way to do it ask questions that lead to the revelation of truth in such a manner that justice is promoted about the best way to accomplish the task.
Example:
My manager once asked me to do a weekly status report. I never sent the status report. My manager came to me and asked me why I never send status reports and I replied "We haven't discussed the conditions for satisfaction".
Now this is not a way to get out of doing the job, it is incumbent upon my manager to provide what to do and how to do it when assigning a task without me having to ask for it (Telling, Training, Testing). Many non-white people just jump right in and attempt to do a job without the training necessary to do the job in the best way. White people even have a word that encourages non-white people to do this...they call it "initiative".
In the process of discussing the conditions for satisfaction I went further with the discussion in an attempt to guarantee no person is being mistreated and also guarantee the person that need help the most gets the most help. I asked my manager if what we had discussed was the best way to handle getting the information to the people that need it the most.
After our discussion we had come up with a way everyone was able to see everyone elses status report and the technical leads were able to make sure the people that they were assigning tasks to were doing work that was assigned and that the work being done was part of their status report. This helped to reduce the number of meeting since everyone knew what everyone else was doing. This also helped to move conversations at the job from what was being done to ways of doing it better. _________________ What is the reason YOU were born into a SYSTEM of INJUSTICE if not to replace it with a SYSTEM of JUSTICE? |
