As fast as you can get in writing what your Roles and Responsibilities are.

Explanation/Reason:
It is best to have in writing what your Roles and Responsibilities are on any job. This allows one to understand what specific tasks are required and what specific duties are to be performed. This allows one to maintain focus on performing specific tasks to one's best ability without any additional perceived distractions.

This also helps one to gauge when they are performing tasks that are "above and beyond the call of duty". Any task performed that is "above and beyond the call of duty" should be documented with date, time, act performed, and who directed the act be performed. This information can be used to acquire additional monetary compensation via the Performance Review process.

If your manager states that your Roles and Responsibilities are to "do whatever you are told to do" get that in writing as well. This may work to your advantage. You may be told to do "whatever you think is best" in a given situation. If you happen to do something that may be incorrect and the result is you are going to be disciplined for it you can always state that your Roles and Responsibilities are to do "do whatever you are told to do" and that you were told to do "whatever you think is best". Even though what you did was not the best thing that could be done you were doing what you were told to do.
